EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the strategic plan of the Battle of Vienna, which took place on September 12, 1683, near Vienna, Austria. The Holy Roman Empire, led by the Habsburg Monarchy, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, under the command of King John III Sobieski, united to defend Europe against the Ottoman Empire, which had besieged Vienna for two months. The Ottoman forces, led by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha and Diyarbakir Mustafa Pasha, were defeated in this decisive battle. The engagement took place at Kahlenberg Mountain and marked the beginning of the end of the Great Turkish War. The plan shows the positions of the various armies, including those of Emperor Leopold I, Ernst Rudiger Graf von Starhemberg, and Jan III Sobieski. The victory at Vienna established the Danube as the border between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire and strengthened the Holy League against the Ottomans. This engraving, created by Lemaitre and Bigant and published in Charles Foster's 'History of Poland' in 1840, provides a fascinating glimpse into the military strategies and tactics employed during this significant European conflict.
