Stomata on epidermis of rose leaf

Stomata on a rose leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lower leaf surface of a Garden Rose Rosa sp. showing stomata. Epidermal cells (green) cover the leaf surface. Scattered on the epidermis are stomata (singular: stoma), tiny pores each of which is bordered by two kidney- shaped guard cells. The stoma at lower left is open. Guard cells serve to open and close each stoma: opening the pore allows gases to be exchanged by leaf tissues during photosynthesis; and closing the pore at night or during dry periods prevents water loss. In the rose, more stomata occur on the underside of leaves. Magnification: x270 at 6x4.5cm size. Magnification: x750 at 6x4.5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of stomata on the epidermis of a rose leaf. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the lower leaf surface of a Garden Rose Rosa sp. , adorned with vibrant green epidermal cells that cover its entire surface. Scattered among these cells are numerous stomata, each bordered by two kidney-shaped guard cells. The open stoma at the lower left corner catches our attention, serving as a gateway for gases to be exchanged during photosynthesis. These tiny pores play a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of plants. However, they are not always open; guard cells have the remarkable ability to regulate their opening and closing. During dry periods or at night, these diligent guards seal off the stomata to prevent excessive water loss. This adaptive mechanism ensures that precious moisture is conserved within the plant's tissues when it is most needed. Interestingly, roses tend to have more stomata on their underside leaves compared to other parts of their foliage. This strategic placement allows for efficient gas exchange while minimizing exposure to external elements. With magnifications reaching x270 and x750 at different sizes, this image invites us into an enchanting world where science meets artistry. It reminds us of nature's ingenious design and highlights how even something as seemingly insignificant as a stoma can hold profound significance in sustaining life on Earth.
