Coat of arms copperplate 17th century Ellison and Watson

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in groups of two. These coats of arms are from folio (page) 10 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 288. Cuthbert ELLISON of North Hebborne in ye Bifhoprick of Durham Gent. (Hebburn). 289. Mr. Iohn WATSON of New Caftle in Northumber Land Merchant (John Watson; Newcastle, Northumberland)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - a 17th-century copperplate engraving depicting the coat of arms of Ellison and Watson. The image is extracted from Richard Blomes Britannia, an esteemed atlas published in 1673. Within this intricate artwork, one can observe the coats of arms belonging to individuals who played an integral role in the completion of this monumental work, starting with King Charles II himself. Presented on folio (page) 10, each page displays two groups containing thirty-five coats of arms. It is fascinating to note that during that era, old English writing conventions were followed; hence "ans" appeared as longs resembling 'f, ' while "ss" was depicted as 'fs. ' Furthermore, abbreviations such as "com" represented County. The accompanying texts shed light on these benefactors' identities and their contributions. Cuthbert Ellison hails from North Hebborne in the Bishoprick of Durham and is recognized as a gentleman. On the other hand, Mr. John Watson emerges from New Castle in Northumberland and holds prominence as a merchant. This antique print not only serves as an exquisite decoration but also symbolizes friendship and family ties deeply rooted within British culture. Its ornate design evokes a sense of admiration for traditional customs while acknowledging the significance of heraldic symbolism. As we gaze upon this historic copperplate engraving, we are transported back to a bygone era where artistry met storytelling through meticulous craftsmanship.
