EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Clark Worswick collection of photographs of China and Southeast Asia showcases the new north gate in Shanghai during a significant period in history. Taken between 1860 and 1865, when French and British troops jointly occupied the city before the end of the Taiping rebellion, this image provides a glimpse into a momentous time. Named after General Cousin-Montauban, who arrived in Shanghai in 1860, this gate stands tall within the city walls. The French flag proudly flies from its tower, symbolizing their presence during this occupation. Adjacent to the tower is the City temple hall, which interestingly served as barracks for French soldiers. Adding an intriguing element to this photograph is a caption printed on Chinese paper that has been montaged above the arched gate. It reads "Porte Montauban 1860" further emphasizing its historical significance. The composition of this image beautifully captures both architectural details and historical context. The viewer can appreciate not only the grandeur of the gate but also gain insight into an important chapter in Shanghai's past. Displayed as part of William Saunders' album I, this print offers a unique perspective on Shanghai's history during a time when foreign powers played vital roles within its borders.
