EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Scene 10 of the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, created between 1375 and 1382 in Angers, France. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, after cartons attributed to Jean de Bruges, this masterpiece of International Gothic art is now housed in Angers Castle. The scene depicts The Third Angel and the Lamb, as described in the biblical Book of Revelation. The Third Angel, with wings outstretched, holds a censer from which billows a cloud of incense. This angel is announcing God's judgment, represented by the burning bush in the background. The Lamb, the symbol of Christ, stands calmly amidst the chaos, emphasizing His divine power and salvation. The rich colors and intricate details of the tapestry are a testament to the artisans' skill during the Middle Ages. The Western artistic tradition during this period, known as the Middle Ages or Medieval Ages, was characterized by a focus on religious themes and a strong sense of decorative arts, including textiles. The Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series is a significant example of this artistic period, showcasing the intricate designs, vibrant colors, and narrative storytelling that defined the era. This image of The Third Angel and the Lamb is a powerful reminder of the religious beliefs and artistic traditions that shaped the Western world during the Middle Ages.
