Wolframite, Castle an Dinas Mine, St Columb Major, Cornwall, England
Wolframite contains iron, manganese and tungsten and is the main ore mineral of tungsten. Until the mid 1800s it was treated as a waste product but it later became a high value by product at many tin mines in Cornwall. The Castle an Dinas tungsten mine, in the St Austell Mining District, operated on a limited scale during the First World War and Second World War and production peaked between 1945-1958 when around 3, 000 tons of wolframite was produced

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent specimen of Wolframite, extracted from the Castle an Dinas Mine in St Columb Major, Cornwall, England. Composed of iron, manganese, and tungsten, this mineral serves as the primary ore for tungsten. Interestingly, during the 1800s it was disregarded as waste but later gained significant value as a byproduct in various tin mines across Cornwall. The Castle an Dinas tungsten mine operated on a smaller scale during both World Wars and experienced its peak production between 1945-1958 when approximately 3,000 tons of wolframite were extracted. This stunning photograph not only highlights the geological significance of this region but also pays tribute to its historical mining heritage. Intriguingly captured by photographer Andy Tindle from Royal Cornwall Museum, this image portrays the unique characteristics of wolframite. Its metallic lustre shines through shades of grey and white with hints of orange rust adding depth to its allure. The presence of Castle an Dinas in the background adds a touch of nostalgia and reminds us that these minerals are not just objects but bear witness to our industrial past. As we admire this remarkable print at the museum exhibition or within our own personal collection, let us appreciate how nature's hidden treasures can transform into invaluable resources that shape our world's history.
