Alchemical tree, Philosophia reformata

The Alchemical Tree. Engraving depicting a tree surrounded by figures used in allegory by alchemists. The tree itself carries symbols representing the Moon, Sun and five planets. Around it are discs carrying symbols such as various birds, a unicorn and a body rising from a grave, showing the stages of life. This engraving comes from Philosophia reformata by Johann Daniel Mylius, printed at Frankfurt in 1622, but is a reworking of emblems created by Valentine for his series called Azoth

. In this print, we are transported back to the 17th century, where alchemists sought to unravel the secrets of nature's transformation. The intricate engraving titled "Alchemical Tree, Philosophia reformata" is a visual symphony that encapsulates their quest for enlightenment. At its core stands an enigmatic tree adorned with symbols representing celestial bodies - the Moon, Sun, and five planets. This mystical arboreal figure serves as a conduit between heaven and earth, embodying the interconnectedness of all things in alchemical philosophy. Surrounding this majestic tree are meticulously crafted discs bearing diverse allegorical symbols. Birds take flight across these ethereal circles while a unicorn gracefully grazes nearby.
