Cholesterol particle, artwork
Cholesterol particle, artwork. This is low density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad, cholesterol. It consists of a core of esterified cholesterol molecules(green and blue) surrounded by a shell of unesterified cholesterol (green) and phospholipids (orange). It is attached to an apolipoprotein (pink), which makes it soluble in blood. When there are high levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood it builds up on the sides of blood vessels hardening them, a condition named atherosclerosis. This narrows the blood vessels and may block them

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the intricate structure of a cholesterol particle, specifically low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as "bad" cholesterol. Against a striking black background, the image showcases LDL's composition and its role in our bodies. The core of this LDL particle is formed by esterified cholesterol molecules, depicted in shades of green and blue. Surrounding this core is a shell composed of unesterified cholesterol (green) and phospholipids (orange). The particle remains soluble in blood due to its attachment to an apolipoprotein (pink). However, when levels of LDL cholesterol rise within the bloodstream, it can lead to a dangerous condition called atherosclerosis. This occurs when excess LDL builds up on the sides of blood vessels, causing them to harden over time. As a result, these narrowed blood vessels may become blocked entirely. This thought-provoking artwork not only highlights the structural intricacies of LDL but also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels for overall cardiovascular health. Through scientific artistry like this piece from Science Photo Library, we gain visual insight into complex biochemical processes that impact our well-being.
