False-colour SEM of ciliated hair cells in the ear

Inner ear. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of bundles of ciliated hair cells (pink) situated in the macula utriculi within the human inner ear. They are responsible for maintaining equilibrium and the detection of directional and positional movement such as the tilting of the head. These hair cells are immersed in a fluid, called the endolymph, and are connected to the vestibular nerve. Currents in this fluid displace the position of the hair cells resulting in the production of pulses which are sent to the brain via the vestibular nerve. Magnification: x3550 at 6x7cm size. x5580 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of ciliated hair cells in the inner ear. The false-colour scanning electron micrograph reveals bundles of these pink-hued sensory cells, nestled within the macula utriculi region. These remarkable structures play a crucial role in maintaining equilibrium and detecting directional movements, such as head tilting. Immersed in a fluid known as endolymph, these hair cells are connected to the vestibular nerve. As currents within this fluid displace their position, they generate pulses that are transmitted to the brain via the vestibular nerve. This complex process enables our auditory sense and spatial orientation. The magnification level of x3550 at 6x7cm size or x5580 at 4x5ins grants us an up-close view into this microscopic world. Through this image, we gain insight into the delicate mechanisms responsible for our perception of sound and spatial awareness. Science Photo Library presents this stunning photograph as part of its collection on hearing anatomy and human body subjects. It serves as a reminder of both the extraordinary complexity and aesthetic appeal found within our own bodies – a testament to nature's artistry at every scale.
