Luigi Groto, Italian poet

Luigi Groto (1541-1585), Italian poet. The circular Italian inscription gives his name, calls him the blind man of Hadria (referring to Adria, northern Italy), and states that here he is 31 years of age. Groto studied philosophy and literature despite losing his sight soon after birth. He lived and worked in Venice, where he published several works of poetry and plays. Groto also worked as an editor on books by the 16th-century Italian aristocrat Giovanni Maria Bonardo. Artwork from the 1589 edition of Bonardos La grandezza, larghezza e distanza di tutte le sfere. This work concerned the nature of the planets, stars and celestial spheres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Luigi Groto, a renowned Italian poet from the 16th century. Despite losing his sight shortly after birth, Groto defied all odds and became an influential figure in literature and philosophy. The circular Italian inscription accompanying the portrait reveals his name and refers to him as "the blind man of Hadria" paying homage to his birthplace in northern Italy. At the age of 31, depicted in this image, Groto had already established himself as a prolific writer and playwright based in Venice. He published numerous works of poetry and plays that showcased his immense talent despite his disability. Additionally, he worked as an editor on books by Giovanni Maria Bonardo, an esteemed Italian aristocrat of that era. The artwork featured here is taken from the 1589 edition of Bonardo's "La grandezza, larghezza e distanza di tutte le sfere" which delves into the nature of planets, stars, and celestial spheres. This piece beautifully combines artistry with scientific exploration. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historical moment through their lens. The monochrome oval illustration surrounded by a decorated border adds depth to this portrayal of Luigi Groto's head-and-shoulders pose. This thought-provoking photograph serves as a reminder not only of Groto's remarkable achievements but also highlights the power of human resilience in overcoming adversity.
