It was built in 1961 and consists of eight 16-metre dishes. Pluton made the first successful radiolocations of the planets Venus (1961), Mercury (1962), Mars and Jupiter (1963) It was also used to communicate with a long list of Soviet space probes including all the Venera and Mars missions. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Pluton space radio receivers in 1969. Located in Yevpatoria, Ukraine, these antennas were part of the renowned ADU-1000 arrays within the Pluton system. Built in 1961, this system played a crucial role in deep space communications and space radar studies. Comprising eight colossal 16-meter dishes, the Pluton system achieved groundbreaking radiolocations of various planets including Venus (1961), Mercury (1962), Mars, and Jupiter (1963). Moreover, it facilitated communication with numerous Soviet space probes such as Venera and Mars missions. These remarkable antennas also contributed to deep space radio astronomy. The monochrome image beautifully captures the sheer magnitude of these powerful instruments. The octet of dish-shaped receivers stands tall against the backdrop of an expansive sky. Their precise positioning reveals their ability to steer towards specific locations for optimal signal detection. Hailing from Crimea's Crimean region within Ukraine at that time but now under Russian control, this photograph serves as a testament to Soviet Union's advancements in space exploration during the 1960s. It symbolizes their commitment to pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of celestial bodies. This print from Science Photo Library is not associated with any commercial use but rather represents a historical milestone in scientific achievement.
