Supernova in galaxy

Supernova SN1994D. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of supernova SN1994D (lower left) in the galaxy NGC 4526. A supernova is the explosive death of a star. Its outer layers are thrown into space in a huge explosion, which can rival the brightness of an entire galaxy, as seen here. This was a Type 1a supernova, all of which have the same brightness. This allows their distance to be calculated by how bright they appear from Earth. NGC 4526 has a small, bright nucleus (centre) and thick bands of dust in its arms. This galaxy is part of the Virgo cluster of galaxies lying some 55 million light years from Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring phenomenon of a supernova in the galaxy NGC 4526. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) captured this mesmerizing image of supernova SN1994D, located in the lower left corner of the frame. A supernova marks the explosive demise of a star, with its outer layers violently expelled into space in an immense explosion that can outshine even an entire galaxy, as evidenced by this striking display. The featured supernova is classified as Type 1a, known for their uniform brightness. This characteristic enables scientists to calculate their distance from Earth based on how luminous they appear to us. NGC 4526 itself boasts a compact and radiant nucleus at its center, surrounded by thick bands of dust within its spiral arms. Situated approximately 55 million light years away from our planet, NGC 4526 resides within the Virgo cluster of galaxies. This breathtaking snapshot offers a glimpse into the vastness and beauty of our cosmos while also shedding light on stellar evolution and astrophysics. Captured by Science Photo Library's expertise in science photography, this print serves as a reminder of humanity's insatiable curiosity about space exploration and our continuous quest to unravel the mysteries hidden within distant celestial bodies.
