Upgraded Arecibo radio telescope with subreflector

Upgraded Arecibo radio observatory. Aerial fisheye lens view of the Arecibo radio telescope, with its gregorian subreflector system newly installed in 1997. This largest radio telescope in the world is situated in a natural crater in the mountains of Puerto Rico. The new subreflector system with two mirrors is housed in a 90-tonne dome receiver seen suspended 130 metres above the fixed dish. It can send and receive signals to examine planets and asteroids & also analyse Earths upper atmosphere. To scan the sky the dome is steered above the 305m dish. The upgrade includes a 16m high buffer screen around the dish and a new radar transmitter that increases Arecibos power by 20 times

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial fisheye lens view showcases the upgraded Arecibo radio telescope, a remarkable feat of scientific engineering. Installed in 1997, the gregorian subreflector system revolutionized this already largest radio telescope in the world. Nestled within a natural crater in Puerto Rico's majestic mountains, it stands as an emblem of human curiosity and ingenuity. The newly added subreflector system boasts two mirrors housed within a colossal 90-tonne dome receiver suspended an astonishing 130 meters above the fixed dish. This cutting-edge technology enables the telescope to send and receive signals for comprehensive planetary and asteroid exploration, as well as meticulous analysis of Earth's upper atmosphere. To scan the vast expanse of our celestial canvas, the dome is deftly steered above the expansive 305-meter dish. As part of its upgrade package, a towering 16-meter high buffer screen now encircles this monumental structure while a state-of-the-art radar transmitter amplifies Arecibo's power by an astounding twentyfold. Beyond its astronomical significance lies another tantalizing possibility - SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). The Arecibo radio telescope has become synonymous with humanity's quest to unravel mysteries beyond our planet. Its immense rounded circular shape serves as both antenna and beacon, tirelessly scanning distant realms for any signs of alien life. In this awe-inspiring photograph captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded that amidst our terrestrial existence lies an insatiable desire to explore and understand what lies beyond
