Figure 42 - Gaiety Expressed Through Lustfulness, Cynicism, and Lewdness
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of gaiety in the most unconventional way. Taken by Adrien Alban Tournachon, also known as Duchenne de Boulogne, during the mid-19th century, this image explores the complex emotions of lustfulness, cynicism, and lewdness. The subject of this experimental photograph is a man whose face is illuminated with an electric shock. Duchenne de Boulogne was a pioneer in electrophysiology and used electrical stimulation to study facial expressions. In his quest to understand human emotion through scientific means, he employed various individuals as guinea pigs for his experiments. In Figure 42, we witness a unique blend of emotions expressed on the man's face. The lines etched across his forehead reveal traces of cynicism while his eyes convey a sense of lustful desire. The subtle smirk playing on his lips hints at an underlying lewdness that adds intrigue to this enigmatic portrait. Through albumen silver printing from glass negatives—a technique popular during that era—the details are beautifully preserved in shades of black and white. This artistic process enhances the contrast between light and shadow, emphasizing every contour on the subject's face. Duchenne de Boulogne's work not only pushed boundaries within scientific research but also challenged societal norms surrounding expression and emotion. This thought-provoking image serves as a testament to both his innovative spirit and dedication to unraveling the complexities of human nature.
