EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate inner roof structure of The Bridgewater Hall during its construction in Manchester. Looking down on the angular projecting bays on the north-east side, one can witness the impressive concrete frame and inner roof design taking shape. Designed to be the permanent home of the renowned Halle Orchestra, this iconic concert venue began its journey in September 1993. By March 1995, it reached a significant milestone as it was topped out, showcasing its grandeur to all who passed by. Finally, in September 1996, The Bridgewater Hall opened its doors to music enthusiasts from around the world. One notable feature that ensured an exceptional auditory experience was the implementation of a double roof structure. This innovative method effectively shielded the auditorium from external noise disturbances. Additionally, 270 GERB vibration isolation bearings were strategically placed beneath the building's foundation to isolate it from disruptive traffic and tram vibrations. The attention to detail extended beyond acoustics; services were housed separately in a dedicated plant tower while surrounding accommodations embraced urban regeneration and development efforts within Manchester's city center. Through this remarkable image captured by Historic England Archive, we are transported back to witness not only a construction marvel but also glimpse into a futuristic concert hall that has become an integral part of Manchester's cultural landscape.
