EDITORS COMMENTS
"This stunning 18th century illustration depicts a female Damaliscus pygargus, or Bontebok, an antelope species native to South Africa. The painting was created by George Forster during Captain James Cook's second voyage of discovery, which took place between 1772 and 1775. Forster, a naturalist on the expedition, meticulously documented the natural history of the lands they explored, resulting in this beautiful artwork. The Bontebok is an even-toed ungulate, belonging to the family Bovidae and the subfamily Alcelaphinae. It is characterized by its distinctive coat, which features white spots on its rump and sides, earning it the name "bontebok," which means "speckled cow" in Afrikaans. The Bontebok was once hunted to near extinction, but conservation efforts have helped to bring the population back from the brink, and it is now considered a success story in wildlife conservation. This illustration is a testament to the spirit of exploration and discovery that characterized the 18th century. Captain Cook's voyages opened up new frontiers and expanded our understanding of the natural world. Forster's meticulous documentation and beautiful illustrations were instrumental in recording the diversity of life on these newly discovered lands. This artwork, created over 250 years ago, continues to captivate and inspire us with its intricate details and accurate representation of the Bontebok."
