EDITORS COMMENTS
The Defenestration of Prague: A Pivotal Moment in European History This evocative image captures the tumultuous events of the Defenestration of Prague, which took place on May 23, 1618, in the heart of Europe. The scene unfolds in the Old Town Square of Prague, then the capital city of the Bohemian Kingdom in the Austrian Habsburg Empire. The image is filled with a palpable sense of anger and defiance as Bohemian Protestants, outraged by the destruction of two of their churches by Catholic authorities, hurl two royal officials out of the windows of the Hradčany Castle. The background of this historical event dates back to the early 17th century when religious tensions between Catholic and Protestant factions in Bohemia reached a boiling point. The Catholic Church, under the leadership of Cardinal Ferdinand II, sought to impose strict religious uniformity throughout the Habsburg lands. In response, the Protestant Estates, led by the Calvinist nobles, refused to pay their taxes and demanded religious freedom. The situation escalated in May 1618 when Catholic authorities ordered the destruction of two Protestant churches in Prague. This act served as the final straw for the Protestant Estates, who, in a bold and desperate move, stormed the Hradčany Castle and threw two Catholic officials, including the Catholic Chancellor, out of the windows into the courtyard below. The Defenestration of Prague marked the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, a devastating conflict that would last for three decades and reshape the political and religious landscape of Europe. The image of the defenestrated officials, captured in this print, has become an enduring symbol of the religious and political upheaval that swept through Europe during this tumultuous period in history.
