EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving by Johann Georg Klinger, titled "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" (The Butterflies and Moths Represented in Natural Images), was published in Erlangen, Germany, in 1786 by Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. The image showcases various stages of the Pine Tree Lappet, Dendrolimus pini, a moth species native to Europe, North America, and Asia. The Pine Tree Lappet is a large and striking moth, with the adult males and females depicted in this engraving exhibiting distinct differences in appearance. The male, with its broad, wing span and prominent, feathery antennae, is shown on the left, while the female, smaller in size and lacking the antennae, is on the right. The larvae, pupa, and chrysalis of the Pine Tree Lappet are also illustrated, providing a comprehensive representation of this moth's life cycle. The Pine Tree Lappet is a phalaena or tiger moth, belonging to the family Erebidae. It is commonly found in pine forests and is known to feed on the needles of pine trees. The larvae, or caterpillars, are characterized by their distinctive, rustic appearance, with a brown body and distinctive white, wavy lines. During the pupa stage, the caterpillar transforms into a chrysalis, which eventually hatches into an adult moth. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the fascination with the natural world that existed during the 18th century. The meticulous hand-coloring and careful engraving techniques employed by Klinger and Espers highlight the beauty and complexity of the Pine Tree Lappet, and serve as a reminder of the rich history of entomology and the role it plays in our understanding of the natural world.
