EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies and Moths in Representations according to Nature), depicts an intriguing assembly of six different Lepidoptera species. The central figure is the Red-headed Chestnut, Conistra erythrocephala, with its vibrant orange-red head and chestnut-brown wings adorned with black spots. To the left, the Toadflax Brocade, Calophasia lunula, is shown with its distinctive pale gray wings speckled with darker gray and black. The Grey Shoulder Knot, Lithophane ornitopus, is featured on the right, its wings displaying a striking pattern of gray and brown with a distinctive dark line across the shoulders. The Red-headed Chestnut, Toadflax Brocade, and Grey Shoulder Knot are all moths from the Phalaenidae family. The intricate details of their wings and bodies are beautifully captured in this engraving, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century. The metamorphosis of these insects from caterpillar to pupa and finally to adult moth is a fascinating process, and the study of Lepidoptera has long been a popular area of scientific inquiry. This exquisite engraving not only showcases the beauty of these creatures but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the naturalist who documented them. The other species depicted in the engraving include the Virens, Flavescens, Paleacea, Turca, Burren Green, Calamia tridens, Sallow, Xanthia icteritia, Angle, Striped, Enargia double line, Mythimna, and several others. Each species is rendered with remarkable accuracy and attention to detail, making this engraving a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or entomology.
