EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (The Butterflies in Representations according to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases two exquisite moths: the Silver Y moth (Autographa gamma) and the Essex Y moth (Cornutiplusia circumflexa). The Silver Y moth, depicted in the first four plates, is characterized by its frosted silver wings with orange edges and distinctive black markings. The Essex Y moth, shown in plates five and six, boasts a more subdued appearance with shades of brown and orange on its wings. Moths, like their more famous counterparts, butterflies, undergo a remarkable metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult. The larvae of these moths feed and grow, eventually forming a pupa, or chrysalis, in which they transform into their adult form. The intricate details of the Silver Y and Essex Y moths' wings are a testament to the beauty and complexity of this natural process. The engraving, produced during the height of the Enlightenment, reflects the growing fascination with the natural world and the desire to document and classify its inhabitants. The meticulous attention to detail in this handcoloured print is a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the dedication of the naturalist. This image invites us to appreciate the delicate balance and intricacy of nature, as well as the rich history of entomology and the role it plays in our understanding of the world around us.
