EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the Curtiss XA-8 30-387, an experimental aircraft designed and built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in the early 1930s. First flown on June 1, 1931, this aircraft was a significant development in aviation technology, marking a new era in military aviation. The Curtiss XA-8 30-387 was a single-engine, single-seat biplane, featuring a retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. Its advanced design and innovative features made it a forerunner of modern military aircraft. The aircraft was powered by a Wright R-1710-E3 Whirlwind engine, capable of producing 525 horsepower. Despite its promising start, the Curtiss XA-8 30-387 had a short service life. It was retired from the United States Army Air Corps inventory in March 1937, after only six years of service. The reasons for its early retirement are not entirely clear, but it is believed that the aircraft suffered from reliability issues and was eventually deemed obsolete by the military. This photograph provides a rare glimpse into the history of military aviation, showcasing the Curtiss XA-8 30-387 in its prime. Its innovative design and advanced features paved the way for future developments in military aircraft technology, making it an important chapter in the annals of aviation history.
