EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Leduc 0.21 01 (registration number 01), a groundbreaking ramjet-powered research aircraft, mounted on its mother-ship, the SNCASE SE.161 Languedoc, during the late 1950s. The Leduc 0.21 01 was the first of two examples built, and it underwent an extensive flight test program from 1953 to 1956. The primary objective of this program was to develop automated, operationally viable throttle controls for ramjet engines, which had the potential to revolutionize aeronautical transportation. During this period, the Leduc 0.21 01 completed an impressive 284 free flights, contributing significantly to the advancement of ramjet technology. Designed for subsonic speeds only, the Leduc 0.21 01 reached a top speed of Mach 0.95, making it a crucial stepping stone towards the development of more advanced supersonic aircraft. The photograph captures the Leduc 0.21 01 parked next to its sister aircraft, also mounted on a Languedoc mother-ship. The Languedoc, a versatile transport aircraft, provided essential support during the flight test program by carrying the Leduc 0.21 01 to various test sites and serving as a recovery platform following each test flight. This photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit of aerospace engineering during the mid-20th century, showcasing the intricate relationship between research and development, innovation, and the pursuit of new frontiers in aeronautical transportation.
