AIDS plant vaccine: researcher infects cowpea leaf

MODEL RELEASED. Plant vaccine for AIDS. Researcher pipettes a viral solution to infect the leaf of a cowpea plant Vigna unguiculata. This work to pro- duce a plant vaccine for AIDS is being conducted at the John Innes Institute in Norwich, England. The cowpea plant, grown for black-eye beans, is prone to severe infection by the cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV). This virus is harmless to humans and ideal for genetic engineering. A gene from the HIV virus (the virus causing AIDS) can be inserted into the CPMV virus. By then infecting cowpea leaves with this altered CPMV virus, an AIDS vaccine of virus particles can be produced by the plant. This AIDS vaccine is successful on mice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a groundbreaking research endeavor at the John Innes Institute in Norwich, England. The image captures a researcher carefully infecting a cowpea leaf with a viral solution as part of an innovative project to develop a plant vaccine for AIDS. The cowpea plant, known for its black-eye beans, is susceptible to the cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), which is harmless to humans and thus ideal for genetic engineering purposes. Scientists have successfully inserted a gene from the HIV virus into the CPMV virus, enabling them to produce an AIDS vaccine using the infected cowpea leaves. This pioneering approach holds immense potential in combating one of humanity's most devastating diseases. By harnessing the power of plants through genetic manipulation and biotechnology, researchers aim to generate virus particles capable of immunizing against AIDS. Although this particular photograph does not depict commercial use or mention any specific company involved in this revolutionary work, it symbolizes the remarkable strides being made in botanical research and plant biotechnology. Through their dedication and expertise, scientists are pushing boundaries and exploring new avenues towards developing effective vaccines that can save countless lives. Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this significant moment in scientific history – where nature meets technology on our quest for medical breakthroughs.
