Brain limbic system

Limbic system. Artwork of the limbic system of the brain, a network involved in the expression of instinct and mood. The hippocampus (large purple oval, upper right) is involved in memory. It lies next to the amygdala (basal ganglion, red) which controls the emotions. The corpus callosum (green, upper centre to upper right) surrounds the limbic system, its front part covering the hypothalamus (green, only partially seen), which monitors body temperature, thirst and hunger. The hypothalamus is connected to the hippocampus by the fornix (narrow purple tube). The limbic system surrounds the thalamus (brown), a relay station for all sensory messages that enter the brain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the brain's limbic system, a complex network responsible for our instinctual behaviors and emotional expressions. The artwork highlights key components of this system, offering a glimpse into its remarkable functionality. At the forefront is the hippocampus, depicted as a large purple oval in the upper right corner. This vital structure plays a crucial role in memory formation and retrieval. Adjacent to it lies the amygdala, represented by a striking red basal ganglion. Known as the center for emotions, it governs our feelings and reactions. Surrounding these essential elements is the corpus callosum, depicted in vibrant green hues that extend from upper center to upper right. Acting as a protective barrier around the limbic system, it also covers part of another significant component - the hypothalamus (partially visible). Responsible for regulating body temperature, thirst, and hunger sensations. The fornix acts as an intricate connection between two critical regions: linking the hypothalamus with the hippocampus through its narrow purple tube-like structure. Completing this artistic representation is an encompassing thalamus portrayed in warm brown tones – serving as a relay station for all sensory messages entering our brain. Through this visually stunning illustration provided by Science Photo Library, we are invited to explore not only anatomical structures but also delve into deeper understandings of human instincts and moods intricately woven within our central nervous system's limbic system.
