The city is bordered by Lake Pontchartrain (upper centre) to the North. The Mississippi River (brown) flows through the city from far left to bottom centre. The city is built upon the delta formed by river sediments carried into the Gulf of Mexico. As the supply of sediments is reduced by dams, the delta is slowly being reclaimed by the sea. In this snapshot taken on April 26,2000, by Landsat 7's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), we are presented with a bird's-eye view of the city's distinctive features. Situated in the lower center of the frame, New Orleans is bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the north and traversed by the mighty Mississippi River flowing from left to bottom center. The lush green vegetation stands out against the blue waters and white/grey urban areas that dominate much of the scene.
