Poster Prints from Science Photo Library
Phrenology bust
Phrenology bust. Phrenology was a popular pseudoscience of the nineteenth century. The basis for the theory lay in a misplaced belief that a persons character and mental faculties effected the shape of their head. It was thought that this was because the skull became modified over the different functional areas of the cortex of the brain. Practitioners of the technique claimed that they could read a person, that is assess their personality, by feeling the bumps on their head. In this bust, a wide range of personality traits are mapped across the various bones that comprise the skull. Bust by L.N. Fowler

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Phrenology bust, an artifact from the 19th century that represents the intriguing world of pseudoscience. Phrenology was a widely accepted yet misguided theory during this era, which claimed that a person's character and mental abilities could be determined by examining the shape of their head. The belief stemmed from the notion that different areas of the brain's cortex influenced specific personality traits, causing modifications in corresponding regions of the skull. In this meticulously crafted ceramic bust by L. N. Fowler, we witness an intricate mapping of various personality traits across different bones composing the cranium. Each bump on this single piece serves as a diagnostic tool for practitioners to assess an individual's character and disposition merely by feeling these distinct features on their head. While now regarded as quackery and charlatanism, phrenology played a significant role in shaping medical history during its time. This historical artifact offers us insight into both the curious techniques employed in diagnosing personalities and the prevailing scientific beliefs of 1800s society. Mark M Sykes expertly captures not only the essence but also the controversy surrounding this fascinating piece through his lens. As we gaze upon it, we are reminded of how far our understanding has evolved since then while appreciating how such pseudo-scientific practices have contributed to our collective knowledge today
