Red blood cells embedded in tissue

Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of red blood cells in tissue. Blood is composed mainly of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Red blood cells are pumped to all parts of the body. They contain haemoglobin which bonds with oxygen in a reversible reaction in the lungs, and then releases that oxygen to cells in tissues. They then remove carbon dioxide from the cells and return it to the lungs. Tissues are collections of similar cells acting together to perform specific functions in the body (eg. muscles). Magnification: x1100 when printed 10 cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of red blood cells embedded within tissue. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph, we witness the vital role that these erythrocytes play in our bodies. As the main component of blood, they are tirelessly pumped to every nook and cranny, ensuring oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide. The star players in this microscopic drama are none other than red blood cells themselves. Packed with haemoglobin, these tiny heroes bond with oxygen during their journey through the lungs. Once reaching various tissues, they release this life-giving element to nourish our cells. Simultaneously, they dutifully collect carbon dioxide waste from these very same cells and transport it back to the lungs for exhalation. Tissues depicted here represent collections of similar cells working harmoniously towards specific bodily functions like muscle movement or organ maintenance. This snapshot into physiological processes sheds light on how our bodies operate at a microscopic level. With a magnification factor of x1100 when printed 10 cm wide, this image offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into the intricacies of biology and haematology. It serves as a reminder that even though unseen by the naked eye, countless wonders unfold within us every single moment – all thanks to these remarkable red blood cells embedded in tissue.
