19th Century Crookes Tube
19th Century Crookes Tube. Invented by William Crookes (1832-1919) in the late 19th century this apparatus was used to investigate the path taken by electrons, or cathode rays as they were known. The electrons are emitted from a central element towards the glass. As the electrons collide with the glass they fluoresce. This apparatus was able to show that electrons travel in straight lines. The overall glow of the apparatus is caused by the excitation of the remaining gas molecules in the tube

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of scientific history - the 19th Century Crookes Tube. Invented by the brilliant mind of William Crookes in the late 1800s, this groundbreaking apparatus revolutionized our understanding of electrons, or as they were known back then, cathode rays. The image captures a white background that beautifully contrasts with the glass tube at its center. Charged with electricity, this mesmerizing device emits electrons from a central element towards the glass surface. As these tiny particles collide with the glass, they create an enchanting fluorescence that illuminates their path. Through meticulous experimentation using this very apparatus, scientists discovered that electrons travel in straight lines - a revelation that forever changed our comprehension of particle behavior. The overall glow emanating from the tube is caused by exciting gas molecules still present within it. This photograph not only represents an important milestone in electrical and technological advancements but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity. It transports us back to an era where pioneers like William Crookes pushed boundaries and unlocked mysteries hidden within nature's realm. With its historical significance and intricate details captured against a simple backdrop, this image stands as both an educational tool for those interested in science's evolution and a visually stunning piece worthy of admiration.
