Aristotle, Ancient Greek philosopher C015 / 5780
Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC), Ancient Greek philosopher and naturalist. Aristotle is one of the most important figures in the history of Western thought. He produced a huge output in many areas of knowledge, heavily influencing later thinkers. His cosmology had the unchanging heavenly bodies moving in circular orbits about the Earth. This thinking was not overthrown until the scientific revolutions of the 16th and 17th centuries. He also worked on zoology, taxonomy, embryology, physics and logic. He was a pupil at Platos Academy in Athens and later a tutor of the young Alexander the Great. Artwork from Histoire des Grecs (1889)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher and naturalist who left an indelible mark on Western thought. With a rich history spanning from 384 BC to 322 BC, Aristotle's intellectual contributions continue to resonate today. His profound influence is evident in various fields of knowledge, as he delved into cosmology, zoology, taxonomy, embryology, physics, and logic. The artwork captures Aristotle in a poised seated position on a white background. Carved from marble with meticulous detail by an unknown artist for Histoire des Grecs in 1889, this classical portrayal exudes wisdom and contemplation. Resting his head upon his hand while one arm rests gently on his leg, the philosopher appears lost deep in thought. Aristotle's teachings were not challenged until the scientific revolutions of the 16th and 17th centuries when his belief that heavenly bodies moved around Earth was overthrown. Nevertheless, his legacy endures as one of the most significant figures in human history. As a pupil at Plato's Academy in Athens and later as tutor to Alexander the Great during their formative years together, Aristotle shaped young minds while expanding our understanding of philosophy and natural philosophy. This monochrome portrait serves as a powerful reminder of his enduring impact on ancient Greece and beyond—a testament to the brilliance of this great thinker whose ideas continue to shape our world today.
