Cryptosporidiosis, TEM
Cryptosporidiosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an intestinal surface (orange) infected with Cryptosporidium parvum (round). It is an opportunistic infection of people that have weakened immune systems, such as in AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) patients. C. parvum are parasitic protozoa that can be transmitted to humans from farm animals through milk and water. The release of a toxin results in abdominal cramps and severe diarrhoea.
