Earths internal structure

Earths internal structure, computer artwork. The Earth has an equatorial diameter of 12, 756 kilometres. It has a core of solid iron and nickel (brown), which is around 2500 kilometres in diameter. This is surrounded by a molten outer core (orange) which is around 7000 kilometres wide. Convection of molten metals in the outer core is responsible for the generation of Earths magnetic field. Between the outer core and the surface crust is the mantle (dark orange). This is a highly viscous liquid, on which the solid plates of the crust (grey) float. The crust ranges in thickness from around 5 to 70 kilometres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases Earth's internal structure, revealing the intricate layers that make up our planet. With an equatorial diameter of 12,756 kilometers, the Earth is a fascinating amalgamation of various elements and formations. At its core lies a solid composition of iron and nickel, spanning approximately 2,500 kilometers in diameter. This dense core is enveloped by a molten outer core measuring around 7,000 kilometers wide. The convection currents within this fiery layer generate Earth's magnetic field - an essential force protecting our planet. Nestled between the outer core and the surface crust is the mantle - depicted here in dark orange hues. The mantle consists of highly viscous liquid substances upon which solid plates of crust float gracefully. Ranging from 5 to 70 kilometers thick, these crustal plates form the external shell we call home. This stunning illustration not only provides insight into Earth's geological makeup but also highlights its complexity and delicate balance. It serves as a reminder that beneath our feet lies a world teeming with hidden wonders waiting to be explored. Science Photo Library brings us this mesmerizing print capturing the essence of Earth's internal structure – an awe-inspiring testament to nature's ingenuity and beauty.
