Extrasolar planet Pollux b, artwork

Extrasolar planet Pollux b, computer artwork. The parent star, Pollux (Beta Geminorum) is at upper left. Pollux is one of the brightest stars in the sky, and is around 34 light years from Earth in the constellation Gemini. As of 2008, one planet, a gas giant, has been found orbiting Pollux, and is known as Pollux b. It was discovered in 2006, and orbits its parent star at a distance of 1.7 times the Earth-Sun distance (1.7 AU), taking 1.7 years to complete an orbit. It is about the same size as the gas giants in our solar system, and is shown here with an extensive ring system like that of Saturn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the extrasolar planet Pollux b, a gas giant orbiting its parent star, Pollux (Beta Geminorum). Located in the constellation Gemini and approximately 34 light years away from Earth, Pollux is one of the brightest stars in our night sky. Discovered in 2006, this alien world takes 1.7 years to complete an orbit around its star at a distance of 1.7 times that between Earth and the Sun. The computer-generated illustration depicts Pollux b as a majestic gas giant similar in size to those found within our own solar system. However, what truly captivates viewers is its stunning ring system reminiscent of Saturn's famous rings. This extraordinary feature adds an ethereal beauty to this distant planetary system. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image, it reminds us of the vastness and diversity of our universe. The intricate details captured by Science Photo Library transport us into uncharted territories where imagination meets scientific exploration. Through such breathtaking visuals like these, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond our home planet. These glimpses into otherworldly landscapes ignite wonder and inspire further research into understanding the complexities of celestial bodies far beyond our reach.
