Incisor tooth, light micrograph

Incisor tooth. Light micrograph of a section through an incisor. Incisors are located near the front of the mouth and are used for cutting through tough foods, particularly meat. At the centre of the tooth (dark oval) is the pulp cavity, containing specialised connective tissue and sensory nerve fibres (dental pulp). The bulk of the tooth is dentine (purple at tip, green at root), a mineralised tissue similar to bone. Surrounding the dentine is enamel (thin white layer at top), the hardest substance in the body. The tooth is embedded in the periodontal membrane (dark green) and alveolar bone (yellow). At the surface of the gum is the gingiva (white), the soft tissue that covers the alveolar bone

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of an incisor tooth, providing a glimpse into its remarkable structure and function. Located near the front of the mouth, incisors play a crucial role in cutting through tough foods, especially meat. The sectioned view reveals various layers and components that make up this essential dental feature. At the heart of the tooth lies the pulp cavity, housing specialized connective tissue and sensory nerve fibers known as dental pulp. Surrounding it is dentine, a mineralized tissue similar to bone, which appears purple at its tip and green at its root. Enamel, positioned as a thin white layer on top, stands out as one of the hardest substances found within our bodies. Embedded in both the periodontal membrane and alveolar bone – depicted respectively in dark green and yellow – this incisor remains firmly anchored within our oral cavity. The gum's surface is covered by gingiva, a soft tissue that protects the underlying structures. Through this extraordinary light micrograph captured by Science Photo Library's expert lens, we gain insight into not only how healthy teeth are structured but also their vital role in our daily lives. This image serves as a reminder of just how fascinating human anatomy can be when explored under meticulous scientific observation.
