Inner ear hair cells, SEM C014 / 4852

Inner ear hair cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the sensory hair cells (blue) found in the Organ of Corti in the cochlea of the inner ear. These hairs are surrounded by a fluid called the endolymph. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause the hairs to move. The movement is converted into an electrical signal, which is passed to the brain. A single row of stereocilia can be seen at top, with three rows of outer hair cells below

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate inner workings of our auditory system. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of inner ear hair cells found in the Organ of Corti within the cochlea. The sensory hair cells, depicted in a striking blue hue, stand surrounded by a fluid known as endolymph. As sound waves enter our ears, they create ripples within this fluid medium, causing these delicate hairs to sway and dance in response. Each row of stereocilia is meticulously captured at the top, while three rows of outer hair cells elegantly line up below. These microscopic structures play an indispensable role in converting mechanical vibrations into electrical signals that can be interpreted by our brain. This image not only reveals the remarkable complexity and sensitivity of our hearing apparatus but also serves as a reminder of its vital function in perceiving and interpreting sounds from our environment. It highlights how even the tiniest components can contribute to one's ability to experience and appreciate the beauty of music or engage in meaningful conversations. Through this snapshot provided by CLOUDS HILL IMAGING LTD/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we gain insight into both the biological marvels that govern human hearing and their profound impact on our daily lives.
