Leaf tissue structure, SEM

Leaf tissue structure. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the edge of a leaf from the Common Box (Buxus sempervirens). The surface of the leaf is covered in closely packed circular cells (brown) that make up the epidermis. Below the epidermis are palisade mesophyll layers, made up of elongated column-like cells (green) containing chloroplasts. Chloroplasts (not seen) contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which the plant uses to harness energy from the Sun (a process known as photosynthesis). At the centre of the leaf (red) is the spongy mesophyll, which has large intracellular spaces for gaseous exchange. Magnification: x200 when printed 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate leaf tissue structure of a Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) plant, as captured by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals an awe-inspiring world of botanical wonders. The surface of the leaf is adorned with a multitude of closely packed circular cells in rich brown hues, forming the protective epidermis layer. Just beneath it lies the palisade mesophyll layers, composed of elongated column-like cells in vibrant green shades. These cells house chloroplasts containing chlorophyll, which enables photosynthesis - the remarkable process through which plants harness energy from sunlight. At the heart of this leaf's anatomy lies the spongy mesophyll region depicted in striking red tones. This area features spacious intracellular spaces that facilitate gaseous exchange vital for respiration and metabolism within the plant. The false-colored SEM image provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into nature's microscopic realm. With a magnification factor of x200 when printed at 10 centimeters tall, every detail becomes apparent to our curious eyes. This photograph not only celebrates the beauty found within leaves but also highlights their essential role in sustaining life on Earth. It serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for nature's exquisite designs.
