Liverwort spore case, light micrograph

Liverwort spore case. Light micrograph of a vertical section through a spore case (sporophyte) from a liverwort (Pellia epiphylla). Numerous spores (small, round, brown) and their coiled elaters are in the capsule, the round area at centre right. This capsule is attached by a seta (stem) to the foot area (centre left). The whole structure of capsule, seta and foot is together called a sporophyte. The sporophyte is enclosed within the petal-like calyptra (across top and bottom) that protects the sporophyte until the spores are mature and ready to be released. This liverwort is commonly found on wet rocks by streams

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Liverwort spore case, as seen through a light micrograph. The vertical section reveals the fascinating details of this botanical wonder. Within the capsule, located at the center right, numerous small round brown spores and their coiled elaters can be observed. The sporophyte, consisting of the capsule, seta (stem), and foot area found at the center left, is an integral part of this liverwort's reproductive process. Enclosed within petal-like calyptra that stretches across the top and bottom portions of the image, it serves to protect the sporophyte until its spores reach maturity for release. Pellia epiphylla is commonly found thriving on wet rocks near streams. This particular liverwort species belongs to Hepaticeae family and offers a glimpse into nature's remarkable diversity in plant life. Through advanced microscopy techniques employed in capturing this light micrograph, we are granted access to its hidden world. This visually stunning photograph not only highlights key aspects of botany but also provides insights into plant anatomy and reproduction. Its detailed longitudinal sectioning allows us to appreciate each individual component while marveling at their collective harmony within this magnificent organism. Science Photo Library presents yet another masterpiece from nature's vast gallery - an awe-inspiring portrayal that celebrates both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation simultaneously.
