Mayfly nymph head, SEM

Mayfly nymph head, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Mayflies (order Ephemeroptera) are the oldest surviving winged insects. This is a nymph, one of the larval forms that develops into an adult mayfly. It has compound eyes (one at upper right). The sensory structures called antennae are at top left. The mouthparts are at lower left. Mayfly nymphs are aquatic freshwater insects. They obtain their food from decaying vegetation, green algae and diatoms. Mayflies spend most of their lives in the larval form (from months to years). The adult winged form exists for only a few days, its role being reproduction. Magnification: x46 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Mayfly nymph head, captured through scanning electron microscopy. Mayflies, known as the oldest surviving winged insects, undergo a fascinating life cycle. This particular image depicts one of their larval forms that eventually transforms into an adult mayfly. The nymph's compound eyes are prominently displayed in the upper right corner of the image, while its antennae can be seen at the top left. The lower left portion reveals its mouthparts, which play a crucial role in obtaining sustenance from decaying vegetation, green algae, and diatoms found in freshwater habitats. Mayfly nymphs spend most of their lives submerged underwater and can remain in this stage for months to years before reaching adulthood. Once they emerge as winged adults, they have only a few precious days to fulfill their primary purpose: reproduction. With a magnification level of x46 when printed 10cm wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate the remarkable complexity and beauty present even within tiny creatures like mayflies. It serves as a reminder of nature's incredible diversity and offers insight into the world of aquatic insects. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented team using scanning electron microscopy techniques, this image provides both scientific value and aesthetic appeal for enthusiasts interested in zoology, entomology or simply marveling at Earth's extraordinary wildlife.
