Muscle contraction, artwork

Muscle contraction. Artwork showing the mechanism for muscle contraction in skeletal and cardiac muscle. At top right troponin (T, C, I) is bound to tropomyosin (red), preventing the myosin head (gold) from forming a crossbridge with the actin filament (green). The propagation of an action potential releases calcium ions (purple) into the muscle cell (bottom right). The calcium ion binds to troponin, changing its shape and exposing the myosin binding site on the actin filament. The binding of actin and mysoin causes the muscle to contract (bottom left). The myosin then binds ATP, which allows it to release the actin and return to the starting position (top left)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Muscle Contraction" beautifully illustrates the intricate mechanism behind muscle contraction in both skeletal and cardiac muscles. Set against a striking black background, this print showcases the key components involved in this physiological process. At the top right corner, we see troponin (T, C, I) bound to tropomyosin (depicted in red), effectively preventing the myosin head (shown in gold) from forming a crossbridge with the actin filament (presented in green). However, as an action potential propagates through the muscle cell at the bottom right corner of the image, calcium ions (represented by purple) are released into it. Upon release, these calcium ions bind to troponin and induce a change in its shape. This alteration exposes the myosin binding site on the actin filament. Consequently, actin and myosin bind together causing muscular contraction - depicted at the bottom left of this artwork. To complete one cycle of contraction and relaxation, myosin then binds adenosine triphosphate (ATP), allowing it to release from actin and return to its starting position as shown at top left corner. With its meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors contrasting against a dark backdrop, this art piece not only serves as an aesthetic delight but also offers valuable insights into one of nature's most fascinating processes – muscle contraction.
