North Africa at night, ISS image
North Africa at night. International Space Station (ISS) image of Egypt (centre) and the Sinai Peninsula (bottom right) at night. The Mediterranean Sea is across top. Parts of the ISS and a docked Russian spacecraft can be seen around the edges of the image. Lights (yellow) of increasing intensity show areas of increasing population, with areas of few lights being more sparsely populated. The majority of Egypts population live in the fertile areas surrounding the River Nile, whilst much of the rest of the country is empty desert. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of North Africa at night, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). The image captures Egypt in all its glory, with the iconic River Nile winding through the fertile areas where a majority of the country's population resides. The contrast between these illuminated regions and the vast empty desert that dominates much of Egypt is truly striking. The Mediterranean Sea glistens across the top of the image, adding a touch of serenity to this awe-inspiring view. Alongside Egypt, we can also spot the Sinai Peninsula in the bottom right corner. As our eyes wander towards the edges of this photograph, we catch glimpses of both parts of ISS and a docked Russian spacecraft. What makes this image even more intriguing is how it reveals patterns in population density through varying intensities of yellow lights. Areas with brighter lights indicate higher population concentrations while sparser lighting signifies less densely populated regions. Taken on October 28th, 2010 by an Expedition 25 crew member aboard ISS, this snapshot offers us a unique perspective on our planet's geography and urban development. It serves as a reminder that even from space, Earth remains an enchanting mosaic waiting to be explored and understood further.
