Paranthropus robustus cranium (SK46) C016 / 5100

Paranthropus robustus cranium (SK46). Lateral view of a cast of a fossil of part of the cranium of an adult Paranthropus robustus hominid. This specimen was probably female. The cranium was crushed, with only half of the braincase present, and a portion of the face, palate and maxilla. This fossil, dating from 1.5 million to 1.8 million years ago, was discovered at Swartkrans, South Africa by Robert Broom and J. T. Robinson in around 1949

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Paranthropus robustus cranium (SK46), offering a rare glimpse into our ancient human ancestors. The lateral view of this cast reveals the intricate details of an adult Paranthropus robustus hominid, believed to be a female specimen. However, due to its unfortunate state of preservation, only half of the braincase remains intact along with fragments of the face, palate, and maxilla. Discovered in Swartkrans, South Africa by Robert Broom and J. T. Robinson around 1949, this fossil dates back approximately 1.5 million to 1.8 million years ago during the Pleistocene era. Its significance lies not only in its historical value but also in shedding light on our evolutionary journey as it represents one branch of our ancestral tree. The monochromatic white background emphasizes every contour and curve present on this fossilized cranium while highlighting its scientific importance within anthropology and paleontology fields. This studio shot allows for meticulous examination and analysis by experts at the Natural History Museum in London. As we gaze upon this single bone from our distant past, we are reminded of how far humanity has come through millions of years of evolution. It serves as a testament to our curiosity about where we came from and fuels further exploration into unraveling the mysteries that lie buried beneath layers of time in Africa's rich history.
