Plant stoma, ESEM

Plant stoma, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). A stoma is a pore that regulates the exchange of gases and water vapour into and out of the plant. The highest concentration of stomata is found on the leaves of a plant, but they are also found elsewhere. The opening and closing of the stoma is controlled by semicircular guard cells (pink), which swell and become turgid to open the stoma, closing it when relaxed. This stoma is from the underside of a leaf from a chameleon plant (Houttuynia cordata)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a plant stoma, captured using coloured environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Stomata are essential pores that play a crucial role in regulating gas and water vapor exchange within plants. While they are predominantly found on leaves, these microscopic openings can also be observed elsewhere in various plant structures. The mesmerizing image reveals the delicate mechanism behind stoma function. Semicircular guard cells, depicted in an enchanting shade of pink, control the opening and closing of the pore. When these specialized cells become turgid or swollen, they facilitate the opening of the stoma to allow for gas exchange. Conversely, when relaxed, they close it off. This particular stoma belongs to a leaf from the chameleon plant (Houttuynia cordata), showcasing its unique structure and biological adaptation. The vibrant colors and intricate details provide insight into plant anatomy while highlighting nature's remarkable complexity at a microscopic level. Captured through advanced technology like ESEM and presented by Science Photo Library, this stunning photograph not only serves as an aesthetic masterpiece but also offers valuable scientific knowledge about botany, flora, biology, transpiration processes within plants, and gas exchange mechanisms. It is a testament to how artistry can merge seamlessly with scientific exploration to create something truly awe-inspiring.
