Pollen tube, light micrograph

Pollen tube. Light micrograph of a section through an evening primrose (Oenthera biennis) stigma. A pollen grain (circular, lower centre) has adhered to the surface of the stigma and produced a pollen tube that is penetrating the surface of the stigma. When the tube is produced, the pollen nucleus divides to produce two nuclei. One is a vegetative nucleus at the tip of the tube (not seen), which controls the growth of the tube. The other is the generative nucleus, it is seen here passing from the grain through the tube (dark spot). It will later divide to form two sperm nuclei (male gametes) which are passed through the tube to the ovary, where fertilisation takes place. Magnification: X234 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pollen tube, as captured under a light microscope. The image depicts a section through an evening primrose stigma (Oenthera biennis), with a single pollen grain adhering to its surface. From this grain, a remarkable pollen tube emerges and penetrates the stigma's surface. The division of the pollen nucleus is also visible in this micrograph. Two nuclei are formed: one being the vegetative nucleus located at the tip of the tube, responsible for controlling its growth; and the other being the generative nucleus seen here passing through the dark spot within the tube. This generative nucleus will later undergo further division to produce two sperm nuclei or male gametes. These sperm nuclei play a crucial role in fertilization as they travel through this protoplasmic tube towards their destination -the ovary- where fertilization takes place. This process highlights nature's incredible mechanism for plant reproduction. With magnification set at X234 when printed 10 centimeters wide, every detail of this botanical marvel is brought to life. It serves as a reminder of both nature's complexity and elegance, offering us glimpses into unseen wonders that occur within our natural world.
