EDITORS COMMENTS
The Number of the Beast" is the fifth scene of the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, created between 1375 and 1382 in the Pays de la Loire region of France. This masterpiece of International Gothic art is now housed in Angers Castle. The scene depicts the opening of the fifth seal of the Apocalypse, revealing a figure on a white horse with a bow and a crown of thorns. The number 666, the Number of the Beast, appears on the chest of the rider, signifying the arrival of the Antichrist. The scene is rich in symbolism and detail, with the figure of Christ in the upper left corner, holding a lamb and surrounded by angels, and the figure of Death riding a white horse in the lower right corner. The tapestry is made of wool and silk, with intricate designs and vivid colors that bring the biblical story to life. The horizontal composition and the use of color create a dynamic and engaging visual experience.
