Canvas Print : Coloured TEM of a basophil white blood cell
Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Coloured TEM of a basophil white blood cell
Polynuclear basophil. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a basophil white blood cell. This basophil has one bi-lobed nucleus (yellow, lower centre) and a second nucleus at upper left, hence it is known as a polynuclear basophil. Purple granules in the cell cytoplasm (green) contain the vasoactive substances heparin (a blood anticoagulant), histamine and the slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A). Basophils are the least common of the white blood cells, and their function is poorly understood. Magnification: x6, 200 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a basophil white blood cell, specifically a polynuclear basophil. The intricate details captured in this image are truly remarkable. The main highlight of the image is the bi-lobed nucleus, depicted in a vibrant yellow shade at the lower center. Interestingly, there is also a second nucleus visible at the upper left region, giving rise to its name as a polynuclear basophil. What makes this image even more fascinating are the purple granules scattered throughout the cell cytoplasm, represented by an enchanting green hue. These granules contain vasoactive substances such as heparin (a blood anticoagulant), histamine, and the slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A). Basophils are known to be one of the rarest types of white blood cells found within our immune system. Despite their scarcity, their exact function still remains somewhat elusive to researchers. With magnification set at x6,200 for a 6x7cm size print, this micrograph provides us with an up-close view into the world of haematology and histology. Its round shape and circular structure add to its aesthetic appeal. In summary, this extraordinary print from Science Photo Library offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into the complex realm of human biology through its depiction of a polynuclear basophil white blood cell under transmission electron microscopy.
