Lungs in a wireframe body, computer artwork
Lungs in a wireframe body, computer artwork. The windpipe (trachea, grey) runs downwards from the neck. It branches (upper centre) into two bronchi, one for each of the two lungs. Each bronchus branches to form bronchioles, which themselves branch to form smaller bronchioles. This repeated branching forms numerous airways in each lung. The airways terminate in tiny air sacs called alveoli (not visible). The alveoli provide a large surface area for gaseous exchange. In the alveoli, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the blood and the lungs. The lungs expand and contract with each breath. The shapes that they form in the chest are shown (dark blue)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of our respiratory system. In this computer artwork, a wireframe body serves as the canvas for an artistic representation of lungs. The windpipe, or trachea, gracefully descends from the neck and branches into two bronchi, each leading to one lung. From there, a mesmerizing network of bronchioles emerges, branching out further and further until it forms countless airways within each lung. Although not visible in this image, these airways ultimately lead to tiny air sacs called alveoli. These alveoli play a crucial role in gaseous exchange between our blood and lungs by providing an expansive surface area. It is through them that oxygen enters our bloodstream while carbon dioxide exits during respiration. The lungs themselves are dynamic organs that expand and contract with every breath we take. This rhythmic motion is beautifully depicted here in dark blue hues against the backdrop of a male torso illustration. This stunning visual representation reminds us of the complexity hidden beneath our skin's surface—a reminder that even seemingly ordinary functions like breathing involve intricate systems working together harmoniously within our bodies. Science Photo Library has once again captured both scientific accuracy and artistic elegance in this remarkable piece of computer artwork depicting the wonders of human anatomy.
