EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a large pair of library globes, the terrestrial 1645/48 and the celestial after circa 1630. Created by Willem Janszoon Blaeu, a renowned Dutch cartographer, these globes stand at an impressive height of 99 cm. The terrestrial globe is composed of thirty-six hand-colored engraved half gores and two polar calottes meticulously pasted onto a plaster sphere. It features detailed cartouches on each hemisphere, with labeled degrees and divisions in vibrant red, blank, and blue hues. The seas are adorned with ships, sea monsters, wind-roses, and shipping routes while the continents showcase mountains, rivers, towns named in Latin along with animals and figures. On the other hand, the celestial globe consists of twelve hand-colored engraved half gores displaying constellations following Mercator's style. The stars are categorized into six levels of magnitude highlighted in gold paint while nebulae are symbolized separately without a cartouche. Both globes rest on identical stands featuring later black painted iron meridians and hand-colored engraved horizons carrying calendars with Saints days as well as wind directions. These extraordinary library globes not only serve as navigational tools but also offer glimpses into historical geography and astronomical knowledge from centuries ago. With their intricate details and exquisite craftsmanship preserved through time, they continue to captivate viewers today.
