EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and joy amidst the turbulence of World War I. Taken in the summer of 1916, it shows Hannah Powell-Cotton, the Commandant of the Quex Park VAD Hospital, surrounded by her daughters and a young boy, Ray Cook, son of the children's nanny. Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum and husband of Hannah, had set up a camp for his daughters using tents from his own expeditions. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, which Hannah ran, had opened in October 1914 and closed in January 1919. The photograph's subjects are dressed in various outfits, with Hannah wearing her VAD uniform. The hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, provided essential care to wounded soldiers during the war. This heartwarming image offers a glimpse into the lives of the Powell-Cotton family during this historic period.
