Lysozome protein crystals

Lysozyme enzyme crystals. Polarised light micro- graph of crystals of the enzyme lysozyme from the egg white (albumen) of a domestic chicken. One of the crystals is being extracted with a wire loop for study using X-ray crystallography. This is a technique for determining the three-dimensional structure of a molecule. The diffraction pattern produced as X-rays pass through a crystal depends on its structure. The study of the structure and function of proteins (proteomics) provides greater understanding of how organisms work. These crystals were grown at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, California, USA, for crystallography using the Advanced Light Source (ALS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Lysozyme protein crystals, specifically the enzyme lysozyme found in the egg white (albumen) of a domestic chicken. The image, captured under polarised light microscopy, reveals an array of enchanting crystal formations. In this particular moment frozen in time, a crystal is delicately extracted using a wire loop for further study through X-ray crystallography. X-ray crystallography is a powerful technique employed to unravel the three-dimensional structure of molecules by analyzing their diffraction patterns when exposed to X-rays. This method has proven instrumental in deepening our understanding of proteins and their functions, collectively known as proteomics. By comprehending how proteins operate within organisms, we gain valuable insights into their inner workings. These remarkable crystals were meticulously grown at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory located in California, USA. The laboratory harnessed the Advanced Light Source (ALS), which utilizes synchrotron radiation to facilitate high-resolution studies on various compounds and structures. The fusion between chemistry and biology showcased here exemplifies the endless possibilities that arise from scientific exploration. Through such endeavors, researchers strive to unlock nature's secrets and pave the way for advancements across multiple fields ranging from medicine to agriculture. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a testament to humanity's ceaseless pursuit of knowledge and its profound impact on our world.
