Palm. Magnified section of palm, historical artwork

Palm. Magnified section of palm, historical artwork. The external ridged surface is the cuticle, with the thin layer of skin below this known as the rete mucosum, or epidermis. Deeper in is the living layer, known as the dermis, consisting of the papillary layer and the corium. The papillary layer shown consists of five secondary papillae, which are in turn composed of primary papillae (white). The corium is dark fading to light, indicating decreasing vascularity (blood supply). Deeper still is the subcutaneous fatty layer (yellow, bottom). From The Nerves of the Human Body, London 1839

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnified section of a palm, revealing the intricate details and layers that make up this fascinating part of the human body. Dating back to 1839, this historical artwork from London provides us with an invaluable glimpse into the biology and anatomy of our hands. The external ridged surface, known as the cuticle, is prominently displayed in this image. Just below it lies the rete mucosum or epidermis, a thin layer of skin that protects and nourishes our palms. Delving deeper into the hand's structure, we encounter the living layer called the dermis. It consists of two distinct parts: the papillary layer and corium. The papillary layer is beautifully illustrated here with five secondary papillae composed of primary papillae in white. As we move towards darker shades on this illustration, we witness decreasing vascularity or blood supply within the corium. Further exploration takes us to the subcutaneous fatty layer at the bottom represented by its yellow hue. This adipose vesicles-rich region plays a crucial role in insulation and protection for our palms. This remarkable piece not only highlights key physiological aspects but also emphasizes various glands such as sabaceous and sudoriferous found within these layers. Overall, Science Photo Library's print offers an awe-inspiring visual journey through time showcasing both artistry and scientific knowledge encapsulated within one frame.
