EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the banks of the majestic Nile at Dendera, Egypt in 1898. The creator, Christian Wilhelm Allers, beautifully captures a scene that showcases both transportation and irrigation in this ancient land. In the foreground stands a shadoof, an ingenious device used for lifting water for irrigation purposes. This simple yet effective contraption highlights the resourcefulness of the Egyptian people when it comes to harnessing the power of their life-giving river. On the shimmering waters of the River Nile floats the paddle steamer Hatasoo, its steam-powered engine propelling it forward with grace. A symbol of progress and modernity during that era, this vessel was crucial for transporting goods and people along this vital waterway. The landscape is serene and timeless; one can almost feel a sense of tranquility emanating from this image. As we gaze upon this lithograph from Allers' book "Rund um die Erde" we are transported back to a time when travel was slower-paced but filled with wonder and adventure. Through his artistry, Allers not only captures a moment frozen in time but also offers us a glimpse into Egypt's rich geography and history. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's ability to adapt to its surroundings while embracing progress on both practical and artistic levels.
